Portland, Oregon techno DJ, Producer and A&R, Jak, Jack Coleman and his label Subsensory are very much synonymous with Portland and the Northwest techno scene. It’s though his dedication and love towards his music that keeps him after his craft and makes him a mainstay for techno in the region by providing quality releases from himself, his label, his label mates, and helping to supply his home town with quality techno events such as Closer PDX.
Reminiscent of similar sounds DJ’d in and around Portland.. Jak’s sound can be at times punchy, funky and dynamic. It seems Jak acknowledges this influence and adds to it, making the solid, more driving sounds of techno as his core elements. And what’s more, he is not set in one method, as he is always mixing up his approach and always trying to push himself one step further. This combination generally lends a quality to his output that is hard, funky, technical, and jackin’.
Jak has always had his own groove [winky face] but in the past few years, Jak has been garnering close attention to his own productions being supported by the likes of Carl Cox, and labels such as Slap Jaxx, Trapez, Torque, Fade, and Illegal Alien.. pointing to that fact that Jak has traveled far in his career, but will definitely travel much farther.
Starting out as a DJ at area warehouse parties in the mid 90’s, Jack went on to form the label SubSensory Recordings in 2008, hosting events and putting out over 70 releases from homegrown artists and recognized acts like Bryan Zentz, Angel Alanis and Adam Jay. He later co-founded event production company Closer PDX with industry veteran Gustavo Lanzas, hosting dozens of events with top regional and international talent.
Jack’s DJ sets and studio productions represent strong roots in authentic techno music, with playful grooves, powerful sounds and strong textural details. His original tracks and collaborations with UK artist Sergio Vilas have received plays on radio programs like Carl Cox Global, John Digweed’s Transmissions, and the Time Warp podcast. Jack’s tracks have also been remixed by the likes of Mark Broom, Bryan Zentz, Audio Injection, Chris Fortier, Angel Alanis and Raiz.
While Jack has considerable studio experience, he’s always been a DJ first and foremost, focusing on a three-turntable performance style with heavy layering and fast moving mixes. He’s performed in Tokyo, Osaka, Detroit, Santiago de Chile, Seattle, Vancouver, BC, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and LA, and has shared billings with the likes of Claude Young, DVS1, Truncate, Julian Jewiel, Steve Rachmad, Rødhåd, John Tejada and Luis Flores. He’s also contributed to respected podcasts including Droid Behavior’s D-Node Podcast, Detroit-based podcasts from Blank Code and Dystopian Rhythm, and the Torque Podcast from Japan.
Jack resides in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.
